Sources of Names Listed
John B. Rochelle interviewed Lenith Forrester on 6/13/2002. She stated that the graves belong to George Freeman, wife Ann, and son (whose name may be Jim). According to Lenith, Freeman’s body was found by her uncle hanging in a shed as he and a companion were walking by. Her uncle cut the rope and they took the body to 'the house'. Later, the son died, the mother moved away, later died, and was buried there too. Lenith says this took place before she was born, which was in 1915.
Cemetery Names and Information
We do not have any proof at this time that these are the names of the people buried here. The property would probably have belonged to Joseph L. Newton "Newt" Mast during the period of the burial.
There are no listings for any people with the last name of Freeman in Upon A Lonely Hill The Cemeteries of Johnson County, Tennessee by Jeffrey L. Carrier.
Possible link to the people supposed to be buried here:
1870 Census, Ashe Co NC, North Fork Township
21.
Arnold, Robert 27 Farmer 200 200 TN
Ann 27
David 7
Thomas 4
Freeman, Ann 46 TN
George 21 TN
Robert Arnold is William Robert Arnold, and Ann is Martha Anna Jackson, his wife.
The Ann Freeman and the George Freeman listings are the ones that "might" be
associated with these graves. This is all speculation at this point.
We would appreciate hearing from anyone knowing who is buried in these graves, and the story behind them.
Please contact
with any information.
