Johnson County Folks Buried in
Morgan County, Tennessee

Several families moved from Johnson County, TN (primarily from the Forge Creek area) to the area between Holston Mountain and the South Fork of Holston River between 1905 and 1920. Surnames include Arnold, Greer, Stout, Osborne, Potter, Jackson, and Dunn, among others. They settled on both sides of the TN/VA line, and their descendants live there still. Many are buried in the Potter Cemetery, Harr, Sullivan Co TN, and the Rhudy's Chapel (Pleasantview) Cemetery, Denton's Valley, Washington Co VA.

A group of these intermarried families, led by Marion P. Potter, moved to the Deer Lodge/Chestnut Ridge area of Morgan County when their farms were taken for the South Holston Dam reservoir. They moved about 1946. Of this group, many are buried at the Flat Rock Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery, Chestnut Ridge. Others are buried at the Hall Cemetery on the Bobby Poe farm in Chestnut Ridge, and at the Mount Union Cemetery in Deer Lodge. Marion Potter went on to live in Sweetwater, and is buried there.

Photographs of all Johnson County-related stones for the two Chestnut Ridge Cemeteries are included. The Mount Union stones have not been photographed for this project.
