    Verla Hollar Hope Anderson

    Lenoir, N.C.

    Verla Hollar Hope Anderson, age 89, of Wildwood Road, Lenoir, died Friday, Feb. 20, 2004, at Pitt Memorial Hospital in Greenville, N.C.

    She was born June 6, 1914, in Caldwell County to the late Calvin and Alice Marshall Hollar. In addition to her parents, her first husband, Rufus M. Hope, whom she married in 1932, and passed away in December of 1954, and her second husband, Robert L. Anderson, whom she married in 1966, and passed away in February 2002, and 13 brothers and sisters preceded her in death.

    Mrs. Anderson was retired from Winn-Dixie and was a member of Lower Creek Baptist Church, where she was a member of Mary and Martha Sunday School class and was class secretary. She was also a volunteer at Caldwell Memorial Hospital and as a hobby enjoyed basket weaving. Helping others was a goal of her life and she was a loving mother and friend.

    Survivors include one son, Melton Hope and wife, Alice, of Granite Falls; two daughters, Terry Phillips and husband,Bob, of Greenville, S.C., and Peggy Wood and husband, Fred, of Greenville, N.C.; one stepson, Bobby Anderson and wife, Wanda, of Patterson; one stepdaughter, Gail Craig and husband, Bruce, of Lenoir; five grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and three stepgreat-grandchildren.

    A memorial service will be held today, Feb. 22, 2004, at 2 p.m. at Lower Creek Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Phil Frady and the Rev. Frank Hall. The family will receive friends following the memorial service in the fellowship hall. Interment will follow at Sunset Hills Cemetery in Granite Falls.

    Memorial contributions may be made to Lower Creek Baptist Church, 633 Lower Creek Drive, Lenoir, NC 28645.

    R.A. Bowman

    "R.A." Bowman, Jr., 74, of Park Loop, Rhodhiss, died Friday, Jan. 2, 2004, at Caldwell County Hospice. The funeral will be 3 p.m., Monday, at Granite Funeral Service Chapel. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service and other times at the residence. Burial will follow in Sunset Hills Cemetery.

    Odell Alonzo Canter

    Mr. Odell Alonzo Canter, 79, of Overlook Drive, Lenoir, a native and former resident of Watauga County, died Friday, Dec. 23, 2005, at his home.

    He was born June 6, 1926, to the late Frank Canter and Lillie Icenhour Canter.

    Mr. Canter was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and was retired from Broyhill Furniture in Lenoir.

    Survivors include three daughters, Darlene Clark and husband, Rick, of Lenoir; Donna McCall and husband, Tommy, and Sandra Canter, all of Hudson; two sons, Alan Canter and Douglas Canter, both of Lenoir; two brothers, Harvey Canter of Boone and Gurney Canter of Banner Elk; two sisters, Dorothy Miller of Hickory and Viola Coffey of Yadkinville. He is also survived by 11 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.

    In addition to his father and mother, he was preceded in death by six brothers and two sisters.

    Services were conducted this afternoon (Monday) at 2 p.m. at Mackie-High Funeral Home Chapel in Granite Falls, officiated by the Rev. Bruce Miller. Burial followed in Sunset Hills Cemetery in Granite Falls.

    Anne Downs

    HUDSON - Mrs. Anne Ledford Downs, 76, of 4114 Kendell Place, died Sunday, Jan. 27, 2002, at Frye Regional Medical Center.

    Funeral services will be tonight at 8 at Bass-Smith Funeral Home Chapel with the Revs. Don Ingle and Dale Leonhardt officiating. Graveside services will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Sunset Hills Cemetery in Granite Falls.

    The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 8 at Bass-Smith Funeral Home.

    James Greene

    James Wallace Greene, 71, of Granite Falls, died Tuesday, Dec. 19, 2006, at Brian Center of Hickory.

    Mr. Greene was born in Wilkes County to the late James Edward Greene and Bell Phillips Greene on July 7, 1935. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife, Alice Jo Blankenship Greene.

    He had served in Korea with the United States Army and was of the Baptist faith.

    Mr. Greene is survived by a son, Richard Greene of Hudson; a daughter, Teresa Roark and husband Johnny of Granite Falls; and five grandchildren, Alyssa Roark, Seth Greene, Carolina Greene, Kali Greene and Allison Greene.

    The family will receive at Bass-Smith Granite Funeral Service today from 6 to 8 p.m.

    The service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 22, 2006, at the Bass-Smith Granite Funeral Service Chapel. The Rev. Tom Hunter will be officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Hills Cemetery.

    Pallbearers will be Johnny Shell, Kevin Day, Robert Blankenship and Robert Burleson.

    Memorials may be made to Caldwell County Hospice and Palliative Care Center, 902 Kirkwood Street NW, Lenoir, NC 28645 or Palliative Care Center and Hospice of Catawba Valley, 3975 Robinson Road, Newton, NC 28658.

    Lois W. Miller

    GRANITE FALLS - Lois Jeanette Williams Miller, 79, of Hickory, died Monday, May 8, 2006, at Camelot Manor Nursing Center. Mrs. Miller was born in Caldwell County to the late Glenn Eric Williams and Hettie Yount on May 4, 1927. She was of the Baptist faith, and a retired as an LPN after 50 years of service with Guardian Health Services. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Vernon Ray Miller; and a brother, Tony Williams. Mrs. Miller is survived by three sons, Daryl Miller and wife, Joan, of Hudson, Steve Miller and wife, Sherry, of Hickory, and Daniel Miller and wife, Cheryl, of Conover; a daughter, Carolyn Kirby and fiancé, Walt Thornberg of Bethlehem; a brother, James "Pickle" Williams of Granite Falls; nine grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends from 3 to 4 p.m. today, one hour prior to the service, at Bass-Smith Granite Funeral Service. The Rev. Clyde Bumgarner will officiate the service today, May 9, 2006, at Bass-Smith Granite Funeral Service Chapel at 4 p.m. Burial will follow in Sunset Hills Cemetery. Pallbearers will be family members, Adam Miller, Chris Miller, Jacob Miller and Richard Miller. Bass-Smith Granite Funeral Service is serving the family of Lois Jeanette Williams Miller.

    Hattie Propst

    Hattie Sisk Propst, 93, of Camelot Nursing Home, Granite Falls, died Wednesday, Jan. 21, 2004, at Camelot Nursing Home.

    She was born on Oct. 3, 1910 in Catawba County.

    She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter Sisk.

    Mrs. Propst was a retired textile worker and member of Rhodhiss First Baptist.

    Funeral services will be Saturday, Jan. 24, at 3 p.m. at Pendry's Chapel. Burial will be at Sunset Hills.

    The family will receive friends Saturday, Jan. 24, from 2:30 to 3 p.m. at Pendry's Funeral Home.

    Memorials can be made to Rhodhiss First Baptist Church, 200 Park Ave., Rhodhiss, NC 28667.

    Boyd Reid

    Boyd Finley Reid, 82, of Twin Meadow Dr., Hudson, died Tuesday, Dec. 3, 2003, at his daughter's residence in Rhodhiss.

    He was born May 10, 1921, in Caldwell County to the late Tom Reid and Hattie Coffey Reid. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Florence Storey Reid; three brothers, Jack Reid, Perry Reid and Harold Reid, and a sister, Pearl Reid McCreary.

    Mr. Reid was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, and a member of Friendship Baptist Church. He retired from Caldwell Freight Lines.

    Survivors include two daughters, Vicki Reid Gragg of Rhodhiss and Gayle Reid Haas of Hudson; a grandson, Michael Summerlin of Taylorsville; two granddaughters, Sonya Haas Mulack of Italy and Lacie Webb of Rhodhiss; a great-grandson, Tyler Summerlin of Taylorsville; a brother, Sam Reid; three sisters, Cleo Reid Clark and Hazel Reid Keller, both of Granite Falls and Shirley Reid Winters of New Jersey, and a number of nieces and nephews.

    Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at Mackie-High Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Wayne Caviness officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Hills cemetery.

    The family will receive friends Saturday from 1 until 3 p.m. at the funeral home.

    Memorials may be made to the Boyd Reid Fund, c/o Vicki Gragg, 100 Marion Ave., Rhodhiss, N.C. 28655, to be used for charitable work.

    Lyndon Reid

    Lyndon Mitchell Reid, 90, of Harold Drive, Granite Falls, died Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2003, at Frye Regional Medical Center.

    She was born Dec. 10, 1912, in Caldwell County to the late Steel and Lela Walker Mitchell. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Harold Reid; two sisters, Edith Dellinger and Margaret Winn, and a brother, Robert Mitchell.

    She was retired from Granite Middle and Elementary School after 20 years as a cafeteria worker. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Granite Falls where she taught Sunday School.

    Survivors include two daughters, Evelyn Barker and Weyburn Bailey, both of Granite Falls; five grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren.

    The funeral is 2 p.m. Saturday at the First Baptist Church in Granite Falls with the Rev. Robert Evans officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Hills Cemetery.

    The family will receive friends Friday from 6 to 9 p.m. in the Family Life Center of the First Baptist Church.

    Pallbearers will be: Kelly, David and Patrick Barker, Barry Bailey, David Day and Barry Hayes.

    Memorial contributions may be made to: First Baptist Church Building Fund, 14 Crestview Street, Granite Falls, N.C. 28630.

    Hoyle Ryder

    Hoyle D. Ryder, 78, of Grace Chapel Rd., Granite Falls died Thursday, Jan. 22, 2004, at his residence.

    He was born May 1, 1925 in Commerce, Georgia to the late Claude W. Ryder and Mary Hudson Ryder. He was preceded in death, in addition to his parents; by a brother, Hoyt Ryder; a sister, Ruth Weaver; and a granddaughter, Christina Ryder.

    Mr. Ryder was a veteran of the U.S. Army and a member of Solid Rock Baptist Church. He also was the retired owner and operator of Ryder Cement Finishing.

    Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Violet Reid Ryder of the home; six daughters and five sons-in-law, Mary and Pete Starnes of Sherrills Ford, Becky and David Bates of Bethlehem, Penny and Rev. Lee Church of Albemarle, Ginger and Mike Proctor of Connelly Springs, Renee and Rev. Danny Laws of Albemarle, and Sandy Ryder of the home; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Tony and Teresa Ryder of Swansboro, Ricky and Shirley Ryder of Granite Falls, and Jimmy Ryder of Hickory; a brother Claude Ryder Jr. of Hudson; a sister Audrey Grice of Granite Falls; 19 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

    Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today at Solid Rock Baptist Church with the Rev. Jerry Stines and Rev. Lee Church officiating. He will lie in state 30 minutes prior to the service. Burial will be at Sunset Hills cemetery.

    The family received friends from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Friday at Mackie-High Funeral Home.

    Mackie-High Funeral Home, 35 Duke Street, Granite Falls, is serving the family of Hoyle D. Ryder.

    Jewell Starnes

    Mrs. Jewell Deane Hicks Starnes, 68, of Hickory passed away Thursday, Oct. 9, 2003, at Frye Regional Medical Center.

    Mrs. Starnes was born in Caldwell County to the late C.A. Hicks and Cordia Anne Overcash Hicks. She retired from Johnson Hosiery in Longview and was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church.

    In addition to her parents she is preceded in death by two brothers, Pat Hicks and Allen Hicks.

    Survivors include her husband, Ned J. Starnes of Hickory; one son, Mike Starnes of Newton; one daughter Joanie Holloway of Hildebrand; two brothers Bill Hicks of Granite Falls and Frank Hicks of Lenoir; one sister, Mildred Branch of Granite Falls; three grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

    A graveside service will be conducted by Rev. Roger Sailors today at 3 p.m. at Sunset Hills Cemetery.

    The family received friends Saturday at Granite Funeral Service and other times at the residence. Condolences may be made to www.granitefuneralservice.com.

    Pallbearers will be Randy Branch, Ricky Branch, Mitchell Starnes, Dustin Holloway, Jason Starnes, and Dale Hicks.

    Erma Baird Williams

    Mrs. Erma Baird Williams, 93, of Newport News, Va., former resident of Watauga County, daughter of the late A.L. and Rosa Hubbard Baird, died Saturday, Nov. 25, 2006 in Newport News, Va.

    Survivors include two sons, James Haigler and wife, Myra, of Richmond, Va. and Dennis Haigler and wife, Judy, of Granite Falls; two daughters, Patricia Haigler of Newport News, Va. and Priscilla O'Neil and husband, Danny, of San Antonio, Texas; two step-sons, David Williams of Granite Falls and Marvin Williams and wife, Patty, of Claremont. She is also survived by a number of grandchildren, great-grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.

    In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Henry Haigler; her second husband, Marshall Williams; five sons, Paul, Billy, Gene, Dean and Jack Haigler; five brothers, Dennis, Herbert, William "Bill", Baxter and Junior Baird; four sisters, Ruby and Gladys Baird, Mrs. Selma B. Johnson and Mrs. Jessie B. Winebarger.

    The family received friends Monday, Nov. 27, from 7-9 p.m. at Bass-Smith Granite Funeral Service, Granite Falls, N.C.

    Graveside services were conducted Tuesday morning at 11 a.m., Nov. 28, at Sunset Hills Cemetery in Granite Falls with Dr. Robert B. Evans officiating.

    Bass-Smith Granite Funeral Service in Granite Falls was in charge of the arrangements.
