Phillippi Cemetery
Johnson County, Tennessee

"David Phillippi was a large landholder in Johnson County and built a two-story log house on his land right across the highway where the Bus Garage stands today. Jane [second wife Jane Fry Porter Phillippi ] always wore black and smoked a pipe and rode wherever she went in a one-horse carriage. In 1885 David and Jane deeded one-half acre of land as "a place of Divine Worship for the use of the ministry and membership of the Methodist Episcopal Church South (now called Valley View United Methodist Church) subject to the discipline usage and ministerial appointments of said Church as from time to time authorized and declared by the General Conference within who the said premises are situated". David also gave one-half acre of land for a public cemetery. The Phillippi Cemetery is one of the oldest in the area. It lies in the Pleasant Valley Community on a gentle sloping east hill that affords a most picturesque view of the surrounding mountains with the peaceful valley nestled between. It is not certain when it first became a burial place, but it is known that it was a public graveyard long before the Civil War and that children of a slave family were among the first to be interned there. David was one of the most generous men in the county. He gave of himself and never asked for anything in return. There will never be another man with such a giving spirit as that of David Phillippi."
