This household includes individuals with three different surnames. Some are black, others mulatto. Their identity has not been determined, although the Duggers probably have ties to the Emanuel L. Dugger family. A closer examination of microfilm for 1860 will be necessary to determine which individuals in the 3rd District held slaves prior to emancipation. Vina Phillips and Thomas Phillips are likely the children of Marie Phillips by a white man. George Dugger is likely the child of Margaret Dugger by a black man. Loretta Dugger is likely the child of Margaret Dugger by a white man. Flora Shown is likely a former slave of the Leonard Shoun family

This household was enumerated 1860 JCT 3rd District # 23. Nancy King apparently died between 1860 and 1870. The parentage of Nancy E. and Alice are not known. John Arnold and Nancy King already had a daughter Nancy Emeline who married in 1854 in Knox Co TN, prior to their moving back to Johnson County. Martha's parents could be either John R. Arnold & Nancy King or she could be the out- of-wedlock daughter of Sarah A. Arnold. Microfilm needs to be checked for this household. Martha is tentatively listed as d/o John and Nancy

John Adkins and Nancy Phillips married JCT 23 Sep 1852. This was his second marriage. His first marriage was to Polly Rodgers JCT 14 Feb 1831. He died between 1850 and 1870. He is enumerated in 1850 JCT 3rd District # 27a, and was a chairmaker. Nancy is enumerated in 1850 JCT 3rd District # 36a as the widow of _____ Phillips. John and Nancy Adkins do not appear in the 1860 JCT census. Mary enumerated in 1850 JCT 3rd District #36d and is presumed the daughter of Nancy and her first husband. Sarah J. and Lottie are presumed to be the out of wedlock children of Mary. There is no record of a husband for Mary. 1880 Census shows Mary using the surname Adkins. Since she was 2 years old when her mother married John Adkins, it is presumed she was adopted by John Adkins. May is listed here as Mary Adkins, since she uses that name in 1880. Her children are listed as Adkins as well

Landon's father appears to have died before 1850. (The 9th District individual, Landon Snyder (Snider) married Clara Martin and consistently stays in the 9th District in 1880, even though apparently not present in the 1870 enumeration.) The 4th District Landon may be the individual who married Rachel Osborn in JCT 23 Jun 1861. There is no Rachel Osborn of the right age (only a 1 year old) in the 1860 JCT census. The identity of Delilah is not known at this time.

The Rash family moved to Johnson County between 1850 and 1860. This household was enumerated in 1860 JCT 4th District # 103. Wife Rebeca has apparently died between 1860 and 1862, as Amos married Delilah JCT 30 Aug 1862 by Isaac Rambo, J. P. Delilah is enumerated in 1860 JCT 5th District # 7d. Delilah's family is not enumerated in the 1850 JCT census. John Levy Dowell is enumerated in 1860 JCT 4th District # 12a as head of household. He served in G Co, 13th Regiment, Tennessee Volunteer Cavalry. This family is listed in article # 484 History of Johnson County 1986. The Dowells came from Wilkes Co NC
1870 Census JCT lists no Wagners. It appears that redistricting occurred between 1850 and 1860, as well as between 1860 and 1870, with the 3rd District shrinking in size each time. In 1850 it included Shoun Crossroads, Gentry Mountain, and the upper part of Roan Valley near present-day Highway 421, plus the Roan Valley Golf Course. By 1870, the line had moved at least as far as Gentry Mountain, leaving the head of Roan Valley in the 4th District, and Shoun Crossroads in the 2nd District.
