Petition to adopt an Illegitimate Child

To the Worshipful County Court of Johnson County, Tennessee your Petitioner Daniel Batton a citizen of said County move and respectfully show to your Worshipful Court that he is desirous of adopt9ing as his own child one Frances J. Gibson aged (7) years. Said child is the Daughter of Joseph Gibson who is also a citizen of said County and this aplication is made with his knowledge and ? the Mother of said Child is dead. The reason your petioner desires to adopt said child is that he and his wife are childless and for the further reason having for some time been acquainted with the child they have taken a fancy to it and in fact become somewhat attached to it.

The prayer of your petitioner is that on final hearing that he may be allowed to adopt said child as his own and its name may be changed from Frances Johanna Gibson to that of Anna Frances Batten, and your petition ???? Oct 16, 1872

Petition to adopt child.

This cause coming on to be heard before the Worshipful County court for JOhnson County on this the 4th day of November 1872. And it appearing to the Satisfaction of the Court that the facts set forth in the Petition are true. It is therefore ordered by the Court that the prayer of the Petitioner be granted. It is further ordered by the Court that the said child be and is hereby given to the said Daniel Batten as his adopted child, with all the rights and privileges & capacities to inherit and suced to a proportional part of the real & personal estate of the said Daniel Batten, as heir and next of Kin, and said Daniel Batten agrees with the Court to treat said child as he would one of his own, and give her advantes of education and Moral training. The Court further orders that the name of said child be changed to that of Anna Frances Batten.
