John Lindsey

John "Fast Gun" Lindsey

John LINDSEY (born after 1851, District 7, Johnson Co. TN). He left Johnson County TN in early 1860's with his parents and siblings. He farmed in Iowa, then went with his sister Elizabeth to Oklahoma Territory and claimed land in the Cherokee-Arapahoe Strip at Kingfisher. He was reputed to be a "fast gun", and impressed his Cherokee neighbors by shooting a hawk out of the sky. [This may be LINDSEY HOGWASH]. His brother James Alexander would bring John along as a body guard when they made the trip to get firewood. He reportedly died in a cabin fire in Arkansas, unmarried, and no children that he told the family about.

Note about Elizabeth LINDSEY (born District 7, Johnson Co. TN ca 1847).

She was one of the few women (she was single), who staked out a claim in Oklahoma in Kingfisher County during the land run. One of the rules of homesteading was that they must be spending the night on the property. She was often afraid at night and would go stay at her brother John's place, for security. Eventually a family "friend" realized what was going on and jumped her claim.
