    Census and Other Lists

Making Do Without the 1890 Census

Except for a few counties, entire census of 1890 burned and it is often more difficult to trace our families during the 20 year span between 1880 - 1900. In an attempt to cover the "lost" 20 years between 1880 and 1900, some lists are available and will be posted.

    1888 Voters List

This list was submitted by Ruby Coleman. The article mentions "Veterans", which may be a bit misleading. Some weren't veterans of a war and the term "veterans" may have also referred to their age - meaning they were over 21 in 1840.

If your ancestor is on the list, you'll know who he voted for in 1840 and 1888. Also, if you don't know just when an ancestor died, this list might help. For instance K. Elliott (Kincheon Elliott) is listed here, but not in the 1891 list of men over the age of 21, which will soon be posted. So presumably Kincheon died between 1888 and 1891. Also soon to be posted, is the 1890 Union Veterans list, which will include widows.

The following names and locations are taken from The Tomahawk, Mountain City, Tennessee, 28 September 1888. The title of the listing was "The Veterans of 1840 Who Will Vote the Ticket in 1888." Those in Johnson County who voted for "Old Tippecanoe" in 1840 and expect to vote for Gen. Harrison in the coming election of '88.
